Egypt’s annual headline inflation rate surged to 14.7% in June 2022, significantly higher than June 2021’s 5.3%, pushed by several commodities’ rising prices, revealed the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

According to their latest release, CAPMAS attributed the rise in headline inflation to the rise in entertainment prices which jumped 29.7%, food and beverage prices by 24.2%, and education by 13.9%.

On the other hand, Egypt’s headline monthly inflation [consumer price index (CPI)] softened to 13.2% in June, inching down from 13.5% in May, slowing down for the first time in 7 months to record at 129.8 points.

CAPMAS pointed towards the decrease of food and beverage prices by 2.2% as contributing to the CPI’s softening, while the prices of clothes and shoes moved up by 0.9%, while housing, water, and energy inched up 0.2%.

The overall decline in inflation was driven by the prices of vegetables which dropped by 18.8%, and fruit which fell by 10.5%, explained the statistics agency.

Prices of cereals and bread rose by 2.4%, fish and seafood by 2.1%, oil and fats by 1.3%, as well as meat and poultry by 1.1%, it added.
