Egypt’s capital city Cairo has been revealed as Africa’s top business city, beating out Algeria’s Algiers, South Africa’s Johannesburg, and Morocco’s Casablanca, which came in second, third, and fourth places, respectively.

The cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Centre shared the news on Monday that Cairo top the top spot on the Global Business Cities Ranking for Africa in 2022 by Statista Global Business Cities.

According to Statista, “the reports evaluate economically relevant cities from around the world based on the most relevant data for decisions at the corporate level, as well as population size and GDP, many other factors play an important role in determining the extent to which a city is suitable as a business location.”

The index looks at several sub-indices, including the economic strength and the level of development of the respective city, its “Business Environment” which centers on infrastructure and logistics, and its “Charisma” which highlights aspects such as tourism, culture and the environment.

Cairo scored particularly well on Operational Environment: While the city's overall ranking of the 200 analyzed was just 176, Cairo is in place 113 for this category. As our infographic shows, Algiers, Johannesburg and Casablanca also rated strongly in comparison to the other African cities. Johannesburg, ranked 176th overall, was strongest in the sub index Society.
