Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy announced that 2022 will be "The Year of Green Hydrogen," as the ministry revealed that it has set an annual plan towards a greener Egypt.

According to Minister Mohamed Shaker, Green hydrogen is the fuel of the future. He added that Egypt’s annual plan includes a long-term focus to upgrade the field of electric energy in Egypt.

In statements to Youm7, Shaker noted that his ministry aims to rely on solar and wind energy in analyzing water to generate green hydrogen gas, stressing that it is one of the least expensive sources of electricity production, as well as environmentally friendly.

Green hydrogen is expected to become a major fuel source in the next 10 years, he explained.

Egypt signed several agreements in 2021 to develop its green hydrogen industry. Green hydrogen is created through splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity, and is said to enable energy-intensive industries to become more environmentally-friendly.

The ministry is looking to diversity the country’s energy sources within Egypt’s 2030 strategy, with work underway to update Egypt’s energy options to include green hydrogen. A reliance on renewable energy to generate electricity will contribute to reducing electricity selling prices, Minister Shaker pointed out.

Shaker highlighted the Beni Suef, the New Administrative Capital and Burullus stations, implemented by the German company Siemens, which have a capacity of 14,400 megawatts, which saves around $1 billion annually in the use of delegations.

Contracts have already been signed to establish 5 new green hydrogen plants as pilot projects, with the minister noting that these projects will be expanded after ensuring their success.

Relying on this type of turbine saves the use of delegations, therefore the state does not need to raise electricity prices, the minister explained.

In order to raise efficiency and operational status of all power generation stations, old stations will be modernized and developed by an Emirati company, Shaker revealed. The name of the company was not mentioned.

Shaker revealed that the Atlas of Egypt, which was prepared by the New and Renewable Energy Authority, shows that it is possible to benefit from the desert regions and Egypt’s high-speed winds (which can record 7,673 km), stressing that renewable energy plants can be established to generate electricity in these areas with a total capacity of 90,000 megawatts.

The minister added that his ministry pays close attention to new and renewable energy projects to generate electricity from the sun and wind, which enabled the New and Renewable Energy Authority to achieve many achievements within a short period.

The Red Sea and the North Coast areas are intended to be locations of new renewable energy stations for green hydrogen extraction, as well as areas to prepare for exporting through sea transport, pointing out that exporting this type of gas will have a very large financial return to Egypt.

The minister revealed that the goal of introducing electric power generation technology from green hydrogen is to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions resulting from generating electricity from fossil fuels, with the aim of preserving the environment.
