Egypt is set to host next year’s Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR), an annual meeting of leaders and heads of telecommunication regulatory agencies and authorities from different countries of the world.

Minister of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) Amr Talaat witnessed the signing of the agreement between CEO of the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA) Hossam El-Gamal and Doreen Bogdan Martin, Director of the International Telecommunication Union’s Development Office.

The 2023 Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) is expected to be held during the 2nd half of 2023 in Sharm El-Sheikh.

With a reputation as the global annual venue for regulators to share their views and experiences on the most pressing regulatory issues, the GSR enables a dynamic global industry regulators dialogue, between regulators, policy makers, industry leaders and other key ICT stakeholders.

In a statement, Talaat emphasized that Egypt’s hosting of the international event is within Egypt’s interest in fostering cooperation with international organizations and various countries in the field of communications and information technology.

Hosting the event is an affirmation of Egypt’s leading role at the international level in the field of telecommunications regulation, Talaat added.

Talaat stressed Egypt’s eagerness to mobilize efforts and harness all possibilities to ensure that this global event emerges in a manner that befits Egypt’s position and leadership.

NTRA CEO El-Gamal explained that the agreement reflects the international community’s confidence in Egypt’s capabilities to host such important international events, adding that it compliments NTRA efforts to strengthen Egypt’s position in the field of telecommunications regulation.

Egypt is one f the oldest member states of the International Telecommunication Union, being a member of the ITU Council since its formation in 1973. The country is an active participant in the union’s activities and work on several axes including the Radio Regulations Board, and chairs study groups and working groups.
