Less than a week after the government raised fuel prices, Egypt’s Ministry of Transport has announced that it will be increasing metro and train ticket prices between 12.5-25%, effective today, Thursday August 1st.
Metro tickets are now priced as follows:
A metro ride of one to nine stops increased from EGP 6 to EGP 8.
Between 10 to 16 stops increased from 8 EGP to EGP 10.
Between 17 to 23 stops, prices climbed from EGP 12 to EGP 15.
Those journeying for more than 23 stops will now pay EGP 20 instead of EGP 15.
The latest prices come soon after a 10-15% increase in ticket prices for buses, microbuses, and taxis announced earlier on Thursday.
For intercity train tickets, the ministry raised prices of first-class tickets on the high-speed Talgo trains to EGP 275 from EGP 225.
Second-class tickets for the Cairo – Alex line was upped to EGP 175 from EGP 150, while the Upper Egypt line will maintain its current prices.
The new prices are part of the government’s plan to reduce subsidies across several sectors to improve public spending. The National Tunnel Authority previously upped prices at the start of the year by more than 20%.
Earlier this week during a press conference, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly emphasized the importance of reducing subsidies and the government’s intention to up prices of numerous services in the coming period.
Subsidized bread prices were increased by 300% in May following the announcement of a surge in internet line and mobile network prices.
