Minister of Finance, Mohamed Maait, has announced his appreciation of Egypt’s “white army,” aka medical professionals, in their dedication and efforts in confronting the COVID-19 pandemic, and will be issuing commemorative coins in their honor.

The Public Treasury and Coinage Authority will be issuing 15 million coins with a special design of medical professions on the back.

According to the minister, 10 million pieces of the one pound coin and 5 million pieces of the fifty piasters coin will bear the new symbol and slogan in recognition of those who have worked valiantly to protect and save the lives of thousands of citizens during the pandemic.

Maait also highlighted that the state continues to support health sector workers, and an additional package has been approved to improve their wages by raising the increase in the medical professions allowance for about 600,000 doctors and nursing staff in the health sector at a total cost of 2.25 billion pounds for members of the medical profession.

Doctors and nursing agencies are disbursed from 400 to 700 pounds and a maximum of 700 to 1225 pounds, provided that university professors in hospitals of medical colleges in universities benefit from this allowance, in addition to establishing a risk fund for medical professionals.

This is not the only commemorative coins the state has issued this year; in celebration of Police Day earlier this year, 3 million pieces of commemorative coins were issued with a special look and slogan.

Head of the Public Treasury and Coinage Authority, Hossam Khader noted the Ministry of Finance’s eagerness to develop more national awareness to important historical events, as well as influential figures.
