Egypt has exported 60% of its natural gas production from the Damietta liquefication plant to Europe, announced the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.
The Damietta liquefaction plant exported 7.2 million tons of liquefied natural gas since 2021, having exported around 4 million tons in 2022 to mark its largest export of LNG to date.
The 20-year-old plant – which restarted production in 2021 after being closed down for eight years – is Egypt’s main plant in terms of LNG exports, explained the ministry, contributing to strengthening the country’s role as a regional energy hub in the Mediterranean region.
Since it started operations in 2005, the plant has produced and exported 500 shipments of liquefied natural gas and is operated by the Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and Eni.
The plant was closed down in 2012 due to declining domestic production at the time, but restarted operations with natural oil finds such as Eni’s giant Zohr field in the East Mediterranean.
During 2022, Eni produced about 60% of the total gas produced in Egypt, the company explained in a separate statement.
