Egypt approves 50B to digital transformation via Digital Egypt Builders initiative

Minister Hala El-said that the move is based on the directives of the political leadership to boost the ICT and telecom sector

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development announced it will allocate EGP 50 million from the public budget of FY 2020/2021 to launch the Digital Egypt Builders initiative (DEBI) through the communication and information technology ministry.

Minister Hala El-said that the move is based on the directives of the political leadership to boost the ICT and telecom sector, which would also improve investments in the sector and support the country’s digital transformation strategy, noting that these are among the state’s priorities.

"Total investments allocated for the communication sector within 2020/2021 national budget amount to USD 10 billion, with a 300% increase," she added.

The initiative was announced by President Sisi in September 2020, and will be implemented in collaboration with a number of international universities specializing in modern technologies, as well as international companies specialized in ICT, leadership or language skills development.

The initiative will provide an annual 1000 free scholarships for students in the fields of engineering, computer and information, and electronics.
